Accuracy is the single most important standard at USA Sportz. This page explains, step by step, how information is verified before it reaches readers, and how stories are handled when full confirmation isn’t yet possible.
1. Our Verification Standard
Every factual claim published on USA Sportz — scores, statistics, quotes, rosters, classifications, and transaction details — is expected to be verifiable against a credible source before publication. When verification isn’t possible before deadline, the information is clearly labeled as unconfirmed rather than presented as settled fact. This standard applies equally to a routine recap and a major breaking story.
2. Primary Source Verification
Wherever possible, claims are verified directly against:
- Official league and association statements, including IHSAA and KHSAA releases for high school coverage
- Team and school announcements
- Press conference transcripts and recordings
- Official statistics providers and published records
- On-the-record statements from players, coaches, or officials
- Court records and regulatory filings for sports business stories
3. Cross-Referencing Multiple Sources
For stories involving rumors, personnel moves, recruiting, or sensitive player news, claims are cross-referenced across multiple independent, credible outlets before being treated as confirmed. A single unverified report is presented as exactly that — a single report, attributed by name — never dressed up as multiply-sourced confirmation.
4. Statistical Accuracy
Game statistics, standings, classifications, and historical data are checked against official records. If a discrepancy surfaces later — for example, through an official statistical correction — the article is updated and the change noted under our Corrections Policy.
5. Quotes and Attribution
Direct quotes are checked against original audio, video, or transcripts whenever available. Quotes are never fabricated, altered for effect, or created by placing paraphrase inside quotation marks. Where the original context matters to a quote’s meaning, that context is included.
6. Breaking and Developing News
Fast-moving stories are handled with extra care:
- Developing stories are marked as such where appropriate
- Initial reports are attributed to their original source
- Articles are updated as confirmation becomes available
- Unconfirmed details are never stated as fact, even under pressure to publish first
7. Review Before Publication
Every article goes through a review step before publication, in which sourcing, quotes, and statistics are checked for accuracy and attribution. No article skips this step, however time-sensitive the story.
8. AI Tools and Verification
As described in our Editorial Policy, AI tools may assist with research, data organization, and drafting. They do not replace human verification: every factual claim is reviewed and approved by a human before publication.
9. When We Get It Wrong
Errors happen despite best efforts. When they do, they are corrected promptly and visibly under our Corrections Policy. Factual errors are never quietly edited away, and corrections are not treated as something to hide.
10. Reporting a Factual Concern
